Something odd about me

This kind of palm tree makes me really sad. Every time I see one. This is why I cannot live in California. If one were in my front yard, I would cry every day.

[photo by Stefanie Schneider - found here in a Google Image search for 'palm trees.' Usually I don't like to steal an artists photo when I'm trolling for images to illustrate my posts, but I really like this one. Hopefully she won't mind.]

But...why?

I'm really not sure, but they've always made me feel very melancholy. In fact, I'm sure Josh is tired of me bringing it up. Maybe its because the tops are so way up there and lonely by themselves. Plus really tall straight trees like that make me kind of tense.

do redwoods weird you out too? the preponderance of palms in southern california bothers me because they just don't look indigenous, and the eucalyptus trees in northern california actually aggravate me. they're not indigenous, are totally useless for paper pulp OR feeding crazed feral koalas (wrong species), and are an insane fire hazard.

I've never actually seen a redwood in person, but I get the impression that I would think they were impressive, yet freaky. Josh tells me that a ton of the sad-palms in LA were planted at the same time and now they are all simultaneously dying of old age.

This makes them even sadder, poor sad lonely things.

I can see a certain sadness in them. For me, though, I think it comes from the fact that they look like they are desperately trying to get somewhere that they can never possibly reach.
