The pleasure of mustard
I realize that Newport cigarette ads are always a little hokey and dated looking (but somehow without this irony that you think they would have -- its like they are completely unintentional in their hokeyness). But this one is extra strange, right? I mean, they are both squeezing this bottle of mustard onto a potato chip. Is this some kind of sexual symbolism that I don't understand? Is mustard pleasurable in the same way that cigarettes are? Did someone actually come up with this idea, or did they just have the models fool around at this cookout for awhile and they randomly came into this great shot?
And Jesus Christ I hope she doesn't eat that chip with all the mustard on it. Gross. Just put the chip down, light up your newport, and start looking a little more cool. If anyone has ever needed a smoke, it is this couple.

um, what? is this a current ad? and that's just gross. maybe they're trying to tell you that once you start smoking newports you'll save money on food because your tastebuds will be so deadened that mustard on a chip will taste good?
Oh, its totally current -- it was in this month's issue of Jane, hot off the newstands.... And very weird.
i am considerably more worried that she's so happy about putting mustard on the chip than i am at the possibility of her eating it. look at her mouth. maybe her jaw is unhinged. maybe she's too weak from lung cancer to keep it closed. (he is, after all, helping her squeeze the mustard. and shame on them if this is the best innuendo they can come up with especially since there are hotdogs on the table.)
seriously, this ad is leftover from the early 80s. not only do i never want to smoke, but i probably won't have any mustard for a month or so.
I thought the same thing about those hot dogs. My current theory is that they originally did some shots where they both squeezed mustard on the hot dog, then some stuffed shirt came in and got all bothered by the sexyness, so he told them to put it on the chip instead. No one knew where he was going with that, but he signed the checks, so they looked as enthusiastic as they could...
